Colic (Part 1)...

Colic is a common problem for babies. It usually happen to baby which is below 5 months. Colic tends to peak around babies at 6 weeks. You can know it is colic when his belly enlarged, baby keep on crying and alternately extends or pulls up his leg.

Colic happens due to immature and sensitive digestive system. Which means, digestive tract contains very few of the enzymes and digestive juices needed to break down food, so processing the proteins in breast milk or formula lead to painful gas....

On part 2, I will evaluate more on how to cope with colic.

Braxton Hicks Contractions...

Last time during my pregnancy I always feel like there's contractions but I do not know whether it is actual contractions or not. But after I experience the true labor pain, I can say that I can differentiate it... The non labor contractions also known as Braxton Hicks Contractions is what most pregnant women experience...

True Labor vs. Braxton Hicks

Braxtons Hicks

  1. Contractions don't get closer together
  2. Contractions don't get stronger
  3. Contractions tend to be felt only in the front
  4. Contractions don't last longer
  5. Walking has no effect on the contractions
  6. Cervix doesn't change with contractions
True Labor

  1. Contractions do get closer together
  2. Contractions do get stronger
  3. Contractions tend to be felt all over
  4. Contractions do last longer
  5. Walking makes the contractions stronger
  6. Cervix open and thins with contractions

Wearing seat belt during pregnancy...

Previously when I was pregnant, I was worry about my belly when it comes to using seat belt... Actually, in order for you to protect your baby, you must protect yourself first. The most important thing is that how you fasten your seat belt. During pregnancy, seat belt must be positioned safely every time you're in a car.

According to Ann Linden, (certified nurse-midwife), the lap belt should be secured below your belly, low and snug on your hipbones. You should never wear the belt across or above your belly because if the car crash, it will cause your placenta to tear away from the uterus.

You should also use the shoulder belt which should fit snugly between your breasts. You shouldn't place the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back. Picture of how to use seat belt during pregnancy... Happy Driving...

Can breastmilk mix with formula?

I believe that many moms wondering whether they can mix their expressed breast milk (EBM) with formula at the same bottle. According to Jan Barger the lactation consultant, EBM can be mix with formula (there is nothing wrong) but you don't want to waste any single drop of your precious EBM. This is because formula from a bottle that your baby drunk must be discarded within an hour of preparation while EBM on the other hand, will "keep," refrigerated for a number of hours in a bottle that's been fed.

For example, if you mix 3 ounces of EBM with 3 ounces of formula but your baby only drink 5 ounces of it, you need to discard the remaining milk....

Always remember to use distilled water to disolve formula and DON'T EVER use your EBM to dissolve the powdered formula because this will change the composition of your EBM and can be very hard for your baby immature kidneys...

Helping your baby to sleep...

Few tips to help your baby to sleep. I've been practising some of it and it really works!!

  • Keep to a routine by begin waking him at an earlier time each day to help encourage him to get the sleep he needs at night -- when the rest of the household sleeps.

  • When your baby naps, allow him to sleep in a well-lit area.

  • During the day, nurse in a quiet, darkened room. You mentioned that your son isn't very interested in daytime feeds. Babies of this age are often caught up in what is going on around them. Feeding him more during the day will allow him to meet his nutritional needs at a time more convenient to you.

  • Using pacifier? If so, allow him to meet his sucking needs at your breast instead, offering nursing in lieu of the pacifier. Regular nursing sessions during the day may help to reduce his middle of the night waking.

  • When nursing, allow your baby to finish the first breast offered. This will provide him with more of your rich hindmilk, which may also help to space out his nighttime feeds.

  • Carry your baby -- with the aid of a sling or other baby carrier. This will help to keep your baby relaxed, especially during the early evening hours, encouraging an easy transition to sleep.

  • Keep the evening calm to avoid overstimulation. If a bath is relaxing for your little one, you can bathe him before bed. If it's too stimulating, bathe him at another time.

  • Nurse in a darkened room at night if your son wakes and wants to feed. Avoid nighttime diaper changes if at all possible. Let him know that night is for sleeping.

Honey, the natural goodness...

I've been giving my little hannah honey since she was 4 months +. Surprisingly, she rarely got fever and cold after that... Beside that, honey also good to:-

Benefits of honey

Benefits of Honey on Skin
Honey is extremely nourishing for the skin when used as face pack and helps in rejuvenating the skin leading to the elimination of fine wrinkles.Honey is a good moisturiser.Honey has considerable Laxative effect on the human digestion system which in turn helps in reducing skin problem ie (pimples) and other problems associated with constipation, which become revealed on the skin.

Antibacterial and antifungal properties of Honey
Honey contains many minerals and vitamins beneficial to man. However, one of the most important properties seems to be its antibiotic action.Honey has been shown to be superior to certain conventional antibiotics in treating some infections. This bactericide (bacteria-killing) property of honey is named "the inhibition effect". Experiments conducted on honey show that its bactericide properties increase twofold when diluted with water. It is very interesting to note that newly born bees in the colony are nourished with diluted honey by the bees responsible for their supervision - as if they know this feature of the honey.

Benefits of honey in Healing wounds & grazes
Honey is of value in treating burns, infected surgical wounds and ulcers. Honey is very viscous, enabling it to absorb water from surrounding inflamed tissue. For example, a study in West Africa showed that skin grafting, surgical debridement and even amputation were avoided when local application of honey to wound promoted healing, whereas conventional treatment failed. For such wounds or Grazes, cover the wound with honey and a bandage.

Benefit of honey in Diarrhoea
At a concentration of 40%, honey has a bactericidal effect on various gut bacteria known to cause diarrhoea and dysentery

Honey in Allergies
Raw honey is an excellent treatment for 90% of all allergies.
Teeth and Honey
Although Honey is sweet, it helps to maintain and protect teeth! Its anti-microbial activity has been tested on several species of dental plaque bacteria. A study shows that honey has been proven to sharply reduce acid production, thus killing the bacteria responsible for dental caries, and blocking the growth of oral bacteria.
Honey in Stomach Ache
Take 1 teaspoon of honey, juice of ½ a lemon with a hot glass of water first thing in the morning.
Honey in Colds and coughs
Honey is remedial in cases of persistent coughs and sore throat. The strong antibiotic properties honey contains coats the throat and reduces throat irritation. Use as required. For Blocked noses, Place a dessert spoon of honey in a basin of hot water and inhale fumes after covering your head with a towel over the basin. For Sore throats, Let 1 teaspoon of honey melt in the back of the mouth and trickle down the throat. Eases inflamed raw tissues.Uneasiness felt in the mouth & throat due to infection can be relieved immediately with honey, so there is extensive scope for honey in cough mixtures & expectorants.
Honey used for children helps inflammatory throat conditions as it both purifies blood.
Benefit of Honey in Digestion
Because sugar molecules in honey can convert into other sugars (e.g. fructose to glucose), honey is easily digested by the most sensitive stomachs, despite its high acid content. It helps kidneys and intestines to function better. Hence honey is beneficial for maintaining a healthy digestive system as well as combating illnesses such as constipation. For poor digestion, Mix 1:1 honey with apple cider vinegar and dilute to taste with water. For patients suffering with various maladies of stomach who consume 10 grams of honey on an empty stomach in the morning & not eat anything thereafter for about 1 hour, will start feeling relief from the disorders within a few days.
Benefit of Honey in Weight control
Honey has a low calorie content. Honey, when it is compared with the same amount of sugar, it gives 40% less calories to the body. Although it gives great energy to the body, it does not add weight.
Rapidly diffuses through the blood
When accompanied by mild water, honey diffuses into the bloodstream in 7 minutes. Its free sugar molecules make the brain function better since the brain is the largest consumer of sugar.
Honey in Conjunctivitis
(pus in the eye)Honey dissolved in equal quantity of warm water. Apply, when cooled, as lotion or eye bath.
Honey and Blood
Honey provides an important part of the energy needed by the body for blood formation. In addition, it helps in cleansing the blood. It has some positive effects in regulating and facilitating blood circulation. It also functions as a protection against capillary problems and arteriosclerosis.
Benefit of Honey on Heart
British researchers have discovered that honey slows the oxidation of 'bad' IDL cholesterol, which is responsible for causing arteriosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. So Honey can fight against Colesterol. And the darker the honey, the better.Pure honey taken with food daily (instead of white sugar) relieves complains of cholesterol. This is beneficial for those of Old age, sufferers of Heart-disease, Diabetes, High-blood Pressure, Stroke, and others.
Appetite and HoneyHoney improves appetite in children suffering from conditions of Appetite loss.
Honey in Headaches & Migraine

Honey  for Constipation
For patients suffering from constipation as spoon of honey mildly heated with a small quantity of wheat husk added after it is cooled & administered to the patient, gives immediate relief.Otherwise take ½ teaspoon honey mixed with ½ - 1cup warm water 2-3 times a day

Why you should wear your baby...

I believe that many moms curious on why we should wear our baby. I found this useful articles on baby wearing on the web. No doubt...

Ten Reasons to Wear your Baby

by Laura Simeon

1. Wearing a baby is convenient.

When we carry a baby in a sling, we can walk around freely and not have to worry about negotiating steps, crowds or narrow aisles with a stroller. Plastic "baby buckets" and removable car seats are heavy and awkward for parents, babies often look uncomfortable, and they are kept at knee level. A sling can block out excess stimuli when breastfeeding a distractible baby, and it allows for discreet nursing in public places. A sling can also double as a changing pad, blanket, or cushion when away from home. I've found my sling especially handy when negotiating busy airports with a small child and several bags!

2. Wearing a baby promotes physical development.

When a baby rides in a sling attached to his mother, he is in tune with the rhythm of her breathing, the sound of her heartbeat, and the movements his mother makes – walking, bending, and reaching. This stimulation helps him to regulate his own physical responses, and exercises his vestibular system, which controls balance. The sling is in essence a "transitional womb" for the new baby, who has not yet learned to control his bodily functions and movements. Research has shown that premature babies who are touched and held gain weight faster and are healthier than babies who are not1. Mechanical swings and other holding devices do not provide these same benefits.

3. Babies worn in slings are happier.

Studies have shown that the more babies are held, the less they cry and fuss2. In indigenous cultures where baby-wearing is the norm, babies often cry for only a few minutes a day – in contrast to Western babies, who often cry for hours each day. Crying is exhausting for both the baby and his parents, and may cause long-term damage as the baby's developing brain is continually flooded with stress hormones.3 Babies who do not need to spend their energy on crying are calmly observing and actively learning about their environment. Baby-wearing is especially useful for colicky babies, who are far happier being worn, but placid, content babies and children will also benefit greatly from the warmth and security of being held close.

4. Baby-wearing is healthy for you!

It can be challenging for new mothers to find time to exercise, but if you carry your baby around with you most of the day or go for a brisk walk with your baby in her sling, you will enjoy the dual benefits of walking and "weightlifting". A long walk in the sling is also an excellent way to help a tired but over-stimulated child fall asleep.

5. Toddlers appreciate the security of the sling.

Slings are usually associated with infants, but they can be very useful for toddlers as well; most slings accommodate children up to 35 or 40 pounds. The world can be a scary place for toddlers, who feel more confident when they can retreat to the security of the sling when they need to do so. Toddlers often become over-stimulated, and a ride in the sling helps to soothe and comfort them before (or after!) a "melt-down" occurs. It can be very helpful in places like the zoo, aquarium, or museum, where a small child in a stroller would miss many of the exhibits.

6. Baby-wearing helps you and your baby to communicate with each other.

The more confidence we have in our parenting, the more we can relax and enjoy our children. A large part of feeling confident as a parent is the ability to read our baby's cues successfully. When we hold our baby close in a sling, we become finely attuned to his gestures and facial expressions. Many baby-wearing parents report that they have never learned to distinguish their baby's cries – because their babies are able to communicate effectively without crying! Every time a baby is able to let us know that she is hungry, bored or wet without having to cry, her trust in us is increased, her learning is enhanced, and our own confidence is reinforced. This cycle of positive interaction enhances the mutual attachment between parent and child, and makes life more enjoyable for everyone.

7. Slings are a bonding tool for fathers, grandparents, and other caregivers.

Slings are a useful tool for every adult in a baby's life. It makes me smile when I see a new father going for a walk with his baby in a sling. The baby is becoming used to his voice, heartbeat, movements and facial expressions, and the two are forging a strong attachment of their own. Fathers don't have the automatic head-start on bonding that comes with gestation, but that doesn't mean they can't make up for this once their baby is born. The same goes for babysitters, grandparents and all other caregivers. Cuddling up close in the sling is a wonderful way to get to know the baby in your life, and for the baby to get to know you!

8. Slings are a safe place for a child to be.

Instead of running loose in crowded or dangerous places, a child in a sling is held safe and secure right next to your body. Slings also provide emotional safety when needed, so that children can venture into the world and become independent at their own pace.

9. Slings are economical.

Slings cost far less than strollers, front-carriers or backpacks. Many mothers consider the sling to be one of their most useful and economical possessions. Inexpensive used slings can be found in consignment and thrift stores, and new ones can be bought for about $25 -$50 (U.S.) - not bad for an item many parents use daily for two years or more! A sling can also be sewn for the price of a length of cotton, some rings and batting; sling patterns are available.

10. Baby-wearing is fun.

Who doesn't love to cuddle a precious little baby? And when your baby is older, having her in the sling makes conversations easier and allows you to observe her reactions to the wonders of the world around her. It's also fun for baby, because when she is up at eye level, other adults notice and interact with her more. Your child will feel more a part of your life when she is in her sling, and you will find yourself becoming more and more enchanted with this special little person.
